Overall good vintage condition, structurally solid, ready for use.
Designed in 1957 for manufacturer France & Son, the Japan Chair represents a masterful cross-cultural intersection of Mid-Century Danish Modernism and traditional Japanese aesthetics. A distinct departure from Finn Juhl’s earlier, ultra-organic sculpted shapes, this piece embraces a sublime, serene simplicity inspired by his study of Japanese building techniques.
The solid horizontal backrest beautifully mirrors the silhouette of a traditional Japanese torii temple gate, complete with elegant circular recesses at the ends. True to Juhl's signature design philosophy, the backrest is visually separated from the bearing frame using small brass brackets, creating a striking "floating" effect that distinguishes the carrying elements from the carried elements.
